How many classic tapes and highlights do we have of referees and umpires blowing calls and losing games for teams? I just mentioned one a paragraph ago. They’d rather have their referees decide that for us. Why am I outlining this stuff? Well, don’t you think these are the guys that should determine the outcome of games? Isn’t that what you’re spending top dollar for? Don’t you want Aaron Rodgers and Peyton Manning and Tom Brady to prove they are the best? Who doesn’t want to see if Adrian Peterson or Lesean McCoy can get that first down on their own to guarantee the victory? The NFL surely doesn’t. Some of those same quarterbacks can run as fast as some of the premier athletes as well. Then there are quarterbacks today that can throw a football 55 yards into a milk carton on a repetitive basis. I’m not saying your driveway is only ten feet wide but you get the idea. Try and jump flat footed from your mailbox to the other side of the driveway and let me know how that goes for you. There are guys who can stand still and then lunge their bodies more than ten feet before touching the ground again. The guys who can do it 40 or 50 times are able to do the first 25 like they’re lifting a couple pencils tied together. To try and put that in perspective, it takes a hell of a lot to be able to bench press 225 pounds from your chest and lock your arms out with that weight. There are guys who can bench press 225 pounds more than 40 or 50 times. They have guys who can run 40 yards in four seconds.
The NFL has some of the greatest athletes in the world. The same guys who staged a lockout two seasons ago and subjected us to replacement referee’s for the first couple games of the regular season and ultimately gave us the “Fail Mary,” or the “Inaccurate Reception,” in the game between the Seahawks and Packers, who coincidentally kickoff the NFL season on Thursday.
